President-elect Donald Trump and his political allies have long maintained that his first term was undermined by federal bureaucrats acting independently of the president’s authority to pursue their own ends.
The catastrophic mismanagement of Hurricane Helene relief is showing the American people that Washington’s dysfunctional but, worse, it doesn’t even seem to be trying to serve the people.
Instead, we serve it. Like livestock.
Mayorkas had said to reporters while on Air Force One, “We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting. … FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season.”
A White House that tried to shift FEMA’s priorities left the citizens of North Carolina suffering for days.
White House spokeswoman Karine-Jean Pierre took the lead in trying to suggest it was a “conspiracy theory” to suggest the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was using its resources to aid illegal aliens. Republicans countered with surprise and shock that FEMA had routed $640.9 million in grants to nonprofits aiding immigrants, many of whom have crossed into the U.S. illegally.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday admitted to reporters that FEMA does not “have the funds to make it through the [hurricane] season,” but said it does have enough to handle Hurricane Helene.
On Wednesday, Harris visited Georgia — two days after former President Donald Trump visited — and announced what many are criticizing as a measly amount of aid for hurricane victims: $750.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allocated over $1 billion for a migrant assistance program over the past two fiscal years, but now it is running out of cash for disaster relief as Hurricane Helene rages on and more storms loom.
