THROUGHOUT much of the Anglosphere, faith in the media has cratered in recent years. The proportion of those believing in the news ‘most of the time’ in the UK has gone from 51 per cent in 2015 to 34 per cent in 2022. The number of those actively avoiding the news has gone from 24 per cent in 2017 to 46 per cent in 2022.

Why do the ‘experts’ get it so wrong about Putin?

I may be wrong and all the experts claiming that Putin is a gravely ill despot fatally damaged by the Wagner incident may be right. However I suspect that our ‘experts’ have all along been guilty of at best ‘wishful thinking’, but more probably have deliberately worked to mislead us about what is really happening in Russia.

….in general, the story that comes closest to real life is Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” By a presidential campaign’s end, as with the emperor at the parade’s conclusion, many swing voters sense when they’re being conned and see through it.
