Almost no one after the election swallowed the notion that Dominion had rigged its voting machines. But millions before the election may have been swayed by the Biden campaign and the media-generated lie that the authentic Biden laptop was part of a Russian intelligence operation.
The case could have had major implications for the media, as the landmark 1964 U.S. Supreme Court case Times v. Sullivan held that a news organization must be shown to have acted with actual malice to be found guilty of defamation.
Fact and fiction seem to be blurring, here. And the Dominion vs Fox case, which was just settled for a staggering $787.5 million (£633 million), tells us a lot about how ‘narratives’ – a ridiculously over-used word these days – truly operate. Because our real obsession today is with what pseuds used to call meta-narratives – that is, media narratives about how media narratives are formed.
A judge said Fox News had a “credibility problem” just days before a $1.6 billion defamation trial after the company disclosed for the first time in nearly two years of litigation that Rupert Murdoch was an officer of the company.
