In 2022, more than 817,000 residents left the Golden State; of those, more than 102,000 moved to Texas.
The departure of companies like Elliott Management, AllianceBernstein and Charles Schwab has drained the two states of thousands of high-paying jobs, further burdening city and state finances by sapping tax revenue.
The bleak numbers come as wealthy Californians have been leaving the state en masse, according to IRS and U.S. Census data, resulting in a loss of nearly $30 billion in taxable revenue in 2021 alone.
Not surprisingly, California, Illinois, New York rank among the bottom five states in terms of outward migration, people leaving.
More moving trucks left from California than any other state in 2022 for the third year in a row, while more Americans are flocking to Republican-led states like Texas and Florida, a new study published on Jan. 3 has found.
California’s population decreased by six-figures as 343,230 people fled the state in 2022, according to data from the United States Census Bureau. The population decline follows a 30-second advertisement from July in which Newsom urged Floridians to move to the blue state where he claimed they “still believe in freedom.”
