This self-image of Democrats and their role in government as benevolent, omniscient educators emerges from a mindset that represents a greater challenge to our freedoms than any attempts at interference in the lives of law-abiding Americans the Republicans are accused of planning.
IT’S VERY easy to be deeply pessimistic at present: wherever you look, freedom and democracy are in full retreat. Perhaps it would be better to say that freedom is in full retreat – a natural consequence of us not living in functioning democracies for a considerable time now.
We’ve not fully arrived at crazytown. But the urge to curtail individual freedom is visible in countless blueprints for a controlled future.
AFTER much rumour and speculation, worst fears were confirmed on Monday when, in Mark Steyn’s own words, ‘The Ministry of Truth Ruled’. In other words Ofcom ruled against Mark Steyn; having abandoned their investigation into one of his shows, they managed to find a single word (‘definitive’) to hang him in a second programme.
