Over the weekend a new ‘pop up’ on the Guido Fawkes website grabbed my attention. Clicking on it brought me to Paul Staines’s story of the latest of many attempts over the years to censor him and his site, this time a threat to block anyone from reading it.
Leftists are becoming increasingly totalitarian in their antipathy for freedom of speech. It’s an obstacle to their desire for power, so it must be crushed.
An exaggeration, you say?
Mere words cannot restrain our aspiring censors from weaponizing their power to silence dissent. Enemies of the First Amendment vow to “hammer it out of existence,” as John Kerry explained this week, and they are prepared to circumvent legal protections to achieve their aims at all costs.
Is the First Amendment becoming a historic relic? On July 4, 2023, federal judge Terry Doughty condemned the Biden administration for potentially “the most massive attack against free speech in United States history.”
Trump’s cases in New York and Washington have prompted a fierce debate over how far judges can go in limiting free speech.
This column is as concerned as anyone about the things our president says when he’s left alone with a live microphone. But the actions Joe Biden has taken to prevent other Americans from saying things represent a much greater danger to our country.
