The lack of clarity about what exactly Biden was saying is the best defense, or excuse, for this worrying moment. Unsurprisingly, this is exactly the defense that the White House is going with—Press Secretary Jen Psaki tweeted on Thursday morning that Biden meant the opposite of what he seemed to say.
“I’m not saying it’s going to be legit,” Mr Biden said when asked about the possibility of fraud in the forthcoming elections that will decide the balance of power in Washington.
“The increase in the prospect of being illegitimate is in direct proportion to us not being able to get these reforms passed,” the Democratic president continued.
Congress is quickly approaching the deadline to raise the debt limit or risk defaulting on its debt for the first time in U.S. history by some point in October.
